Send MessageDerrick Bunton was born and raised in Austin, Texas. He graduated from Southwest Texas State University with a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in 1991 and continued his education at Southwest Louisiana with a Master’s in Health Service Administration.
His first job working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities was with a Texas Supervision and Corrections department, where he worked as an Adult Probation Officer/District Court Officer. As an officer of the court, his primary role was to assure individuals were referred to and connected with appropriate services and county resources.
He went on to take a job at a large private ICF facility as a QMRP and Program Compliance Officer. In addition, he served on the facility’s abuse/neglect committee reviewing all cases and assisting with the development of training curriculum for staff professional development.
In 1995, he worked in Austin, as the Director of Residential Services for a national organization that provided HCS and SHL waiver programs. He was promoted to Assistant Executive Director in 1997 and assisted with new start-ups in other states, until 2001.
In August of 2001, Derrick accepted a Program Director position with the Austin Children’s shelter. He spent seven years with the shelter and assisted with the overall vision of the agency, served on the team that implemented additional programs and services, and assisted with the facility design for a new shelter that was built.
In 2010 Derrick was once again drawn back to working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He worked for the Austin State Supported Living Center as a Unit Director and as the Director of Residential Services. Derrick was nominated and selected for the DADS ‘Building the Bench’ 2013 leadership program. He is a proud graduate of the ‘Building the Bench’ 2013 class and was selected by his classmates to be the class speaker during the graduation ceremony.
In September of 2014, Derrick brought his wealth of knowledge and expertise to the D&S family as the Executive Director of the San Antonio program. His passion for supporting individuals with disabilities makes him a perfect for the D&S team.
