Davy Crockett is not the only frontier to walk the land of upper East Tennessee. Now D&S Community Services has as well. Like Davy Crockett D&S Community Services has traveled throughout all of Tennessee which includes West, Middle, Cumberland Plateau, South Tennessee, East Tennessee and now, what we locals call “upper East Tennessee”.
In late spring 2014 D&S was approached regarding a possible requisition opportunity. After further exploration and discussion D&S chose to embrace this opportunity and expand into Upper East Tennessee. At that time a “posse” was rounded up to get the job done. A make shift office was developed in a conference room at a local hotel to get the ball rolling. Experienced leaders and administrators came from Texas and across Tennessee to the forefront to pitch in and make this transition as easy as possible.
Our office doors opened July 1, 2014 on Justis Drive, Greeneville, Tn. At that time we were supporting 32 people in a variety of day, residential and personal assistance services. Today, we support 45 people, have added 3 additional residential homes, and are in the process of opening three (3) ICF/ID homes for 12 people moving from Greene Valley Developmental Center. In addition, Supported Employment has now begun and 8 people have been referred to Vocational Rehabilitation for job readiness and placement.
Anytime a new program is started you will most surely run across some pot holes on the road traveled. However, the Greeneville team perseveres. “Giving up is not in our motto, if anything it has made us stronger”, says Lorie Copas Executive Director. “We support one another and pick up the slack when needed. Are we tired? Yes, most definitely but there isn’t one person in this office that doesn’t have the best intentions for the people we support to have the best possible life.” “We pride ourselves in building services and supports around the person, and their unique needs, not having the person meet the standard service delivery mold.”
